Student Technology

GNTC students have access to a variety of technology options both online and in the classrooms.

While GNTC personnel can not work on a student’s personal device; laptop, phone, etc. we hope this page is beneficial. Use the links to access more information about these resources.

What is VDI and Why Use It:

VDI (Virtual Desktop Interface) is a technology using VMWare Horizon software and state-of-the-art technologies to provide a flexible desktop experience for students. Key features which make it attractive for students are flexibility, mobility, and included software. Essentially, each VDI session is hosted on GNTC back-end hardware which provides the operating system and all necessary software as part of the delivered desktop environment. The session also provides a ‘clean’ malware-free workstation environment for each user, and can be accessed on-campus or off from dedicated VDI hardware clients (found in some computer labs), or pretty much any laptop, desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

Besides the accessibility aspect, this solution can reduce student cost as the desktop is delivered complete with commonly required software such as Microsoft Office. Mobile storage is also provided via link on the desktop to your Students.GNTC.edu Office 365 OneDrive cloud storage. This makes saved documents, files, and images available to you anywhere with Internet access.  Together, these features and benefits should allow you as a student to be more flexible and successful in completing your GNTC coursework!

  • VDI: On-Campus Access
This is information for logging in to a GNTC VDI client. It is a small modem sized box that replaced a normal large computer tower in some classrooms at GNTC.
  • VDI: Off-Campus Access (and on-campus wi-fi access)
This is awesome… follow these instructions to connect your home laptop or device to a 'virtual' computer that behaves as though it is on this campus. The reason this is great, is because if your home laptop has malware, issues, or you don't have the correct software installed – you could have issues completing assignments. By using this off-campus virtual desktop, you will be working on a clean machine each time you log on.
  • I love using the off-campus VDI and I just need the link.

Remember: You want to use the VDI: Off-Campus Access when you are working at home or away from the campus.

Personal Devices

Wireless

Students have access to wireless access points throughout the campus. We are currently installing a new system with additional access points that will cover areas that were previously dead zones. You are invited to connect your personal devices to the student wifi for school-related content. Please make sure that you are keeping your device up-to-date with all software and security updates.

Cyber Security

Malware, phishing, and viruses are all terms that you've heard of relating to dangerous things that can happen to you online. Learn how these best practices can help to protect you, your data, and your device.

Having Issues?

If you are having issues contact the Student Help Center. While we are limited in the help that we can provide on a personal device, we can offer suggestions that may correct any issue you may have.

Disclaimer:

GNTC is not responsible for student computers, phones, or devices. Students are responsible for keeping their personal devices up-to-date and practicing safe usage. Students should ensure they have the latest antivirus and malware protection on their personal devices. The best option for security remains using the Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) as it provides a clean, malware/virus-free work environment.

Please submit a Student Help Form if you are having issues logging in.
