(Warner Robins, GA) - A rainy road trip to Middle Georgia saw Georgia Northwestern hit high gear early Saturday night as they soared out to an 11-0 run from the tip. But then, the Mustangs tried to cruise their way to another win on their perfect season.
“With just a few seconds left, we doubled-teamed a shooter who just flung a shot up in the air from behind the three-point line to tie it at the buzzer,” said Georgia Northwestern Mustangs Head Men’s Basketball Coach, David Stephenson. “We made a lot of mistakes.”
With the score 78-all going into the extra stanza, the Mustangs found their rhythm putting up ten points in the extra five minutes to win on the road, 88-83.
Mustang Sophomore, Bilal Weems lead all scorers cleaning the nets for 30 in the win. Weems is a product of St. Benedict’s, N.J. “We played in third gear the whole night,” said Stephenson. “It was a good mental discipline win.” Chattooga grads, Perie Finley and Nic Perry combined for 25 on the day. Armuchee’s former sharpshooter, Kyle Wilson added 11. Mustangs Center, Zach Davis dropped in 11 for the Mustangs.
What’s next for the streaking Mustangs? “They’re collecting toys for families for Christmas,” said Georgia Northwestern Provost, Jeff King. “They have finals this week, a ball game this weekend, and then they make what they are hoping will be a big donation to a charity or two.” Last year, the Mustangs collected toys for the Toy Drive sponsored by the Walker County Sheriff’s Department.
On the hardwood, Georgia Northwestern (3-0) will now head to Carrollton on Saturday to square off West Georgia. For more information, you can email the GNTC Mustang Basketball Office at email@example.com.
