How to Apply for Financial Aid

Step 1: Apply

Eligible students can receive one or more types of financial aid while attending Georgia Northwestern Technical College. Financial aid is generally in the form of grants, scholarships, and/or the work-study program. Georgia Northwestern Technical College participates in the following federal and state financial aid programs:

  • Federal PELL Grant
  • Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
  • Federal Work Study (FWS)

  • HOPE Grant
  • HOPE Scholarship
  • HOPE GED

  • Student Loans
NOTE: You must apply annually for all financial aid.

To apply for financial aid—which includes all of the types of aid stated above—a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

You can complete the FAFSA using the internet at: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (www.FAFSA.gov). The web version guides you through the application and assists in providing the right responses. When completing the FAFSA remember to use GNTC’s school code which is 004024.

Please review the Top 6 Student Actions that Delay financial aid.

Step 2: Receive Your Financial Aid

Finalize Your Awards

After you apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you may be required to submit additional documentation. The Financial Aid Office will notify you of the forms or requirements needed to complete your financial aid file.

After your application is received, the Financial Aid Office will send you an award letter via your GNTC student email. Your award letter may be estimated because you are missing information needed in order to complete your file. Please review your award letter carefully and submit any documentation that is needed to finalize your awards. You may also view your award letter on BannerWeb.

You must also review the award provisions in order to ensure that you meet all eligibility requirements for the aid that was awarded to you. Please read the important information about your awards on your award letter.

Receive Your Financial Aid Disbursement

If you have been awarded the HOPE Book Grant or Scholarship, go directly to the Bookstore with a valid student ID and driver’s license to use the HOPE Book Credit. The credit will be available in the bookstore the first two weeks of the term. Up to 50% of Pell awards can be used in the bookstore to help purchase books. This rule is subject to change.

Federal PELL Grant and Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) are disbursed to your student account the 14th day and disbursed to the student the 28th day of classes each semester. The Federal aid (Pell/FSEOG) will be based on the number of hours a student is registered after the 7th day of the term. (Your Pell/FSEOG award will be adjusted up/down for adding and dropping classes by the 7th day.) If you officially or unofficially withdraw from classes before the 6th week of class, you may not be eligible for the entire scheduled disbursement. If you have already cashed your check, you may owe a refund.

Step 3: Maintain your Financial Aid Eligibility

In order to maintain your financial aid eligibility each year, it will be necessary to renew your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. An award year starts with July 1 and ends with June 30 of the next year. Always renew your yearly application at least two months before you plan to attend. Examples: You plan to attend summer—apply no later than April; you plan to attend fall—apply no later than May.

You must also meet Georgia Northwestern Technical College Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAP) in order to maintain your financial aid. Please read the policy located on this link: Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.
