Grants & Scholarships
- Grants - are financial aid allowances that do not normally need to be repaid. GNTC offers both federally funded grants and state funded grants.
- Scholarships - are merit based financial aid awards that do not normally need to be repaid. Scholarships may be offered by the state, the college itself, or outside institutions.

HOPE Grant
The HOPE Grant is a state funded program awarded to students enrolled in a Certificate or Diploma program. The grant pays for 73.6% of the tuition costs (based on the tuition rate for the 2013-2014 year) up to 63 attempted semester hours (Attempted hours are calculated from Summer 2003 to present).For students who wish to later graduate with an Associate’s Degree, the HOPE Grant allows them to “build up” their GPA to a 3.0 so they may later be evaluated for the Scholarship and switch to a Degree program. If the student chooses, he/she may remain in a Certificate or Diploma program and continue receiving the HOPE Grant so long as he/she maintains their eligibility. To maintain eligibility for the HOPE Grant, students must make Satisfactory Academic Progress and (effective Fall 2013) maintain at least a 2.0 GPA at each check-point. Students will be evaluated at the 30th & 60th semester hour check points to ensure they maintain the minimum 2.0 GPA. If a student loses the HOPE Grant at a checkpoint, they may be able to regain it only one (1) time at the next checkpoint. Hope regulations are subject to change. You must be both a permanent resident of the United States for at least 24 months and a resident of the state of Georgia for at least 24 months before you become eligible for the HOPE Grant.

- Student must not be in default on a federal loan
- If student is a Male and born after 1960, he must be registered with the Selective Service (visit http://www.sss.gov for more information on the Selective Service)
- Student must be taking classes within his/her program of study
Federal PELL Grant
The Federal PELL Grant is a needs-based grant which provides assistance to low-income students seeking a post-secondary education. PELL Grant amounts are determined by the student’s Estimated Family Contribution (EFC), cost of attendance, the number of credit hours for which a student is enrolled for classes, and whether the student attends each semester within the academic year. If a student is enrolled in an Associate’s Degree, Diploma, or one of our Pell Eligible Certificate Programs, then he/she may be eligible for the Federal PELL Grant.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Student must have a High School Diploma or GED.

- Student must be enrolled in an Associate’s Degree, Diploma, or one of our Pell Eligible Certificate Programs
- Student must be a US citizen or an eligible non-citizen

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a needs-based grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Only students who both receive the Federal PELL Grant and have the greatest financial need will receive the FSEOG first. Each participating school is allotted only a certain amount of funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid. Once the allotted amount of FSEOG funds have been awarded no more FSEOG awards can be administered until the next fiscal year.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Student must have a High School Diploma or GED.
- Student must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (F.A.F.S.A). Please visit our How to Apply webpage.
- Student must be enrolled in an Associate’s Degree, Diploma, or one of our Pell Eligible Certificate Programs
- Student must be PELL eligible with high financial need and be receiving the maximum PELL amount
- Student must be registered for at least 12 credit hours
- Student must be a US citizen or an eligible non-citizen

Federal College Work Study (FWS)
The Federal Work-Study program (FWS) is a needs-based federally funded program that assists students fund educational expenses by providing employment opportunities. Both on-campus and a few off-campus positions are offered to students. Since education is our primary goal for the student, work hours are generally flexible around the student’s academic schedule, and work schedules normally cannot exceed 12 hours per week. The rate of pay for federal work-study is never less than minimum wage, and Work-Study students are paid twice a month for hours worked.

- Student must be enrolled in an Associate’s Degree, Diploma, or one of our Pell Eligible Certificate Programs

HOPE Scholarship (For Degree Seeking Students)
The HOPE Scholarship is a state funded program awarded to students enrolled in a Degree program. The Scholarship pays for 73.6% of the tuition costs (based on the tuition rate for the 2013-2014 year) up until:
- The student has received payment totaling 127 semester hours from any combination of HOPE Scholarship, Zell Miller Scholarship, HOPE Grant, and/or ACCEL program funds (that is ACCELL program funds received through Spring term 2011); OR
- The student has attempted 127 semester hours of college degree credit regardless of whether or not HOPE funds were received while attempting the hours; OR
- The student has earned a baccalaureate (four-year) college degree, regardless of whether or not HOPE funds were received while earning the degree; OR
- The student has reached the Seven Year Expiration of Eligibility date.
*IF you graduated High school over seven (7) years ago or received your GED over seven (7) years ago, then you have already reached the Seven Year Expiration of Eligibility date. Therefore, you will not be eligible for the HOPE Scholarship.Students graduating from High School with at least a 3.0 GPA and going straight into a Degree program may be eligible for the HOPE Scholarship. Likewise, students who have completed 30, 60, or 90 semester hours that will count toward the degree program they wish
to acquire, may also qualify for scholarship funds. Recipients of the HOPE Scholarship must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and will automatically be evaluated at the end of every spring semester as well as the 30th, 60th, and 90th semester hour checkpoints. If a student loses the HOPE Scholarship at any of the checkpoints, he/she may be able to regain it only one (1) time at the next checkpoint. *For students who lost the HOPE Scholarship and regained it prior to fall semester 2011 (when the HOPE guidelines were revised): If you lose the scholarship again, you may regain it one (1) time at the next GPA checkpoint. Zell Miller HOPE Scholarship
Georgia’s Zell Miller Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement. The scholarship pays 100% of tuition costs (based on the tuition rate for the 2012-2013 year) for Degree seeking students up until:
- The student has received payment totaling 127 semester hours from any combination of HOPE Scholarship, Zell Miller Scholarship, HOPE Grant, and/or ACCEL program funds (that is ACCELL program funds received through Spring term 2011); OR
- The student has attempted 127 semester hours of college degree credit regardless of whether or not HOPE funds were received while attempting the hours; OR
- The student has earned a baccalaureate (four-year) college degree, regardless of whether or not HOPE funds were received while earning the degree; OR
- The student has reached the Seven Year Expiration of Eligibility date.

Academic Requirements
- Graduate from a HOPE-eligible high school (within the last 7 years) with a minimum 3.7 GPA as well as either a minimum score of 1200 on the math and reading portions of the SAT test or a 26 composite score on the ACT test in a single test administration.
- Graduate from a HOPE-eligible high school as the Valedictorian or the Salutatorian with at least a 3.0 HOPE GPA.
- Complete a HOPE eligible home study program with a 3.7 grade point average combined with a minimum score of 1200 on the math and reading portions of the SAT test or a 26 composite score on the ACT test in a single test administration.
- Complete an ineligible home study program with a minimum score of 1200 on the math and reading portions of the SAT test or a 26 composite score on the ACT test in a single test administration. Also, student must earn at least a 3.3 GPA after attempting 30 semester hours of college degree-level coursework taken after home study completion. This allows for payment of the first 30 semester hours after they are completed.
- Had previously enrolled in an eligible post-secondary institution in 2007 or later, as a freshman, meeting one of the academic qualifications listed above and having earned a 3.3 cumulative GPA at the most recent HOPE Scholarship checkpoint.
Students will be evaluated at the end of each spring semester as well as the 30th, 60th, and 90th semester hour checkpoint to ensure they maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA. IF a student loses the Zell Miller Scholarship at any of the GPA checkpoints, the student cannot regain the Zell Miller Scholarship.

Students are encouraged to search for and apply to as many scholarships as possible. There are a variety of Internet sites available to assist students in the scholarship search process. The Financial Aid Office does not recommend you to use any scholarship search that requires a fee! Please notify the Financial Aid Office of any outside scholarships you may receive.
