Welcome to Early College
The Early College at GNTC was designed for at-risk high school students. These students include a variety of needs that were not being met in high school, but can be met while in the program. We currently work with high schools in Catoosa and Walker counties which include: Heritage, Lafayette, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Ridgeland, and Ringgold. From these schools we serve approximately 60 students.
The Early College program began on the Walker County Campus of Georgia Northwestern Technical College in 2007. The program serves three high schools in Catoosa County, Georgia, and two high schools in Walker county, Georgia. Since the conception of the program, over 100 students have graduated from their home high school as a result of participation in Early College. Early College has received the 2012 Recognition of Partnership award from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School and the Catoosa County Public Schools 2012 Small Business Partner recognition.
Early College uses the idea of a personalized learning environment by setting individualized learning plans in place for each student at the beginning of his/her journey through the program. These learning plans include 2 components. The first component is completion of high school core academic courses using online software, Apex. The utilization of this program allows the students the ability to work from anywhere that he/she has computer and internet access. Each student is assigned specific classes at the beginning of each semester to complete during the term with weekly goals in place to keep the students on track. While the students are working on these courses the second component of the program is implemented through the college courses that the students take. Every student is given the opportunity to choose a field of study offered at Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC), and then is assigned to an Early College certificate major. Within the certificate program the student begins earning college credits towards his/her major. The goal is for the student to complete high school and some or all of the required credits to graduate from Georgia Northwestern Technical College in his/her field of study. Each student is tracked on a semester basis for their credit completion and grade point average in both high school and college credits.
The result of the program is that students are given a chance for credit recovery, grade advancement, and high school graduation. The personalized environment allows students a flexible schedule by using online high school courses, and the option of taking college courses during the day or evening, as well as, hybrid or online.
